"We wanted a building that would enhance our home"

Each individual in the Boyd household is benefitting from the smart new home office recently installed in the back garden – the two humans, Simon and Berny, and the cute Cocker canine, Jarvis.

“He’s got us around the whole time now,” said Simon. “We can walk him first thing in the morning and then the rest of the time he mooches around with us whilst we work. He loves it under our desk.” Sure enough, a padded dog bed has pride of place under the new desk from which Simon and Berny now run their successful major events business near Newbury in Berkshire.

The sleek modern corner building sits neatly at the rear of the garden. “We had some decking here previously but it was getting a bit tired and so we thought it would make an ideal spot for a home office,” said Berny.

The couple had been looking to move from their old office premises in a converted barn which they had leased for 16 years. After researching suppliers, they visited Norwegian Log’s stand at the nearby Berkshire Show.

“As soon as we saw the building they had at the show we realised it was the sort of quality we were after. We wanted something that would increase the value of the house if ever we were to sell it, a building that would enhance our home,” said Berny. “We liked all the nice little touches like the lights, bi-fold doors and heaters. It really fitted our needs down to the ground.”

The solid log 4m x 4m office, specifically designed to suit the plot, is finished in a light coloured, contemporary hue. The Boyds transferred their business to the new building in mid-summer. “From placing the order, the whole process went really smoothly. They’ve been a nice company to deal with all round and we’d highly recommend them,” said Berny.

As well as keeping Jarvis content, the real benefits to the Boyds have been cutting out the daily commute and saving on office overheads. Simon added: “We are no more than 30 paces from the back door and we are already saving on costs such as petrol, rent, rates, phone and electricity. It’s such a nice place to work and so quiet. We’re also positive we’ve increased the value of our house.”
